EVANSTON - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, announced the winners of the Illinois 9th Congressional District's 2021 "An Artistic Discovery" Congressional Art Competition, naming students who were chosen to receive the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes. This annual competition, sponsored by the Congressional Institute, invites young artists from around the nation to compose and submit visual art to their member of Congress.

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Vern Buchanan (R-FL) introduced the Save America's Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act of 2021. This bipartisan legislation would permanently ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption in the United States as well as prohibit the export of live horses to Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses to be sold overseas. The SAFE Act has been endorsed by the ASPCA, Animal Welfare Institute, The Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society Legislative Fund, Return to Freedom Wild Horse Conservation.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) joined U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) in reintroducing the Nurse Staffing Standards for Hospital Patient Safety and Quality Care Act. Schakowsky and Brown's bill would set minimum nurse-to-patient staffing requirements, study best practices for nurse staffing, and provide whistleblower protections to protect the right of nurses to advocate for the safety of their patients. Currently, very few states have rules written into law that establish minimum staffing levels at hospitals.
