Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky introduced the Vehicle Safety Improvement Act (VSIA). In light of the numerous failures of the GM recall and other issues with auto manufacturers, this legislation will establish several new important consumer protections to improve driver, passenger, and pedestrian safety. Rep. Henry A. Waxman, Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr., Rep. Bobby L. Rush, Rep. Diana DeGette, Rep. G.K. Butterfield, and Rep. Paul D. Tonko signed on as original cosponsors of the legislation. Please see the below video message from Rep. Schakowsky on the VSIA.
Today, Rep. Schakowsky and 41 other members of Congress – including Reps. Henry Waxman and John Dingell – sent a letter to EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy urging a final rule on the agency’s Tier 3 Vehicle Emission and Fuel Standards program. The rule would reduce tailpipe and evaporative emissions from passenger cars, light-duty trucks, medium-duty passenger vehicles, and some heavy-duty vehicles. The proposed rule, which was published last May, would dramatically improve public health and the environment. Schakowsky made the following statement about the letter:
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Energy and Commerce Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee, released a statement on President Trump's Fiscal Year (2021) budget proposal and the devastating impacts it would have on Older Americans and families across the United States:
Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky took to the House floor to outline and oppose the latest Republican attacks on the environment.
This week, Republicans have ceaselessly attacked the EPA and undone regulations designed to protect our air, water, and public lands. Through his Executive Order earlier in the week, President Trump has replaced the Clean Power Plan with his own Dirty Power Plan. Today, House Republicans voted to pass H.R. 1431, a bill that would stifle the voices of scientists advising the EPA, and lent a microphone to corporate polluters. By doing so, they have further cemented their place on the wrong side of history.
