Housing
Housing is a basic need, and I believe that no one should face homelessness, an unfair or deceptive mortgage, or barriers to accessible housing. I have worked consistently to make housing available to those fighting homelessness, to expand funding and support for affordable housing, to make housing more accessible for seniors and the disability community, and to promote and protect the dream of homeownership in the 9th Congressional District.
Legislation I've Introduced
Inclusive Home Design Act – The bill would expand the number of homes that are accessible for people with disabilities. People with mobility impairments have limited access to most homes because there are currently no federal standards for accessibility features in homes built with federal assistance.
More on Housing
I hope you all had a joyful Thanksgiving holiday! I know I enjoyed spending quality time with my family. It was great to be back in the 9th Congressional District for an extended period of time after 10 straight weeks of voting in Washington, D.C.
Last week, the Supreme Court handed down a series of misguided rulings that will make it harder for individuals to achieve the American dream.
On Friday, the Supreme Court granted the Department of Justice’s emergency stay application in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA, preventing a lower court decision from going into effect that would have put women’s health at risk and undermined FDA’s medical judgment. For now, Mifepristone, which is used in 54% of all abortions, remains safe, legal, and available.
EVANSTON – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day:
“Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy will forever stand as a reminder of our capacity to make real, lasting change for the betterment of all. Today, Dr. King’s message is more important than ever: To create a just society where all individuals can succeed, we must come together as a nation to right our wrongs.
"This morning, I was honored to join civil rights warrior, Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., a close friend and colleague of Dr. King, as he offered a powerful and inspiring message of hope and action.
On Friday, I voted in favor of the Fiscal Year 2023 government funding legislation. This monumental funding package will have major implications for generations to come.
