As a first-generation American, I know firsthand the tremendous contributions immigrants have made to our nation. The 9th Congressional District of Illinois is one of the most diverse in the country. Our neighbors come from all corners of the globe, as evidenced by more than fifty languages spoken at many of our schools. As a nation and a community, we are indebted to the immigrants who came here to make a better life for their families, bringing with them their dreams, their culture, and commitment to hard work. Our diversity is our greatest strength.
My office has developed considerable expertise and success in helping constituents who are having problems with immigration issues. We work with our contacts at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to help with any problems with naturalization, work authorization, or other applications, and we regularly contact U.S. Consulates abroad to help with visa issues. We do everything we can to help reunite families and fix errors. The experts on our staff will talk with you and help as much as we can. My office has assisted more than 26,000 constituents since I've been in Congress, many of whom we have helped on immigration-related matters.

As always, I had a great week back in the 9th Congressional District! Not only was I able to host a wonderful Seder dinner for my friends and family, but I also had a fantastic time out and about in our community. Some highlights include speaking with students at Mosaic School of Fine Arts in Rogers Park and Crystal Lake High School, touring Xylem, the largest employer in Morton Grove, and visiting Clearbrook West, a non-profit organization that supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in McHenry County.
Gun violence is one of the most serious public health threats we face. In fact, gun violence recently surpassed car accidents as the leading cause of death for American children. Future generations are counting on us to stop this horrific epidemic.
Last Congress, after nearly 30 years of inaction, Congress was able to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which closed gun law loopholes and implemented new gun violence prevention policies. But our work is far from over - we need universal background checks, safe storage laws, and an assault weapons ban.
After months of far-right extremists hijacking our appropriations process, Congress has completed the final part of the FY 2024 budget, which will help Americans deal with high prices, sides with the hard-working middle class, protects women’s rights, and reinforces America’s global leadership. I am pleased to report that my final community project funding request was approved, which means, in total, I will be bringing home nearly $19 million to the 9th Congressional District of Illinois.
During his State of the Union address last Thursday, President Joe Biden emphasized that America is a story of progress, possibilities, and resilience. He delivered a strong speech that detailed how far we have come under his leadership, the hurdles we have cleared, and his bold, optimistic vision for the future.

“Happy Casimir Pulaski Day to all those celebrating in our community, and across the state of Illinois! Today, we celebrate the extraordinary life of General Casimir Pulaski and reflect upon the great impact that one immigrant crossing the ocean over two hundred years ago had on the founding of our nation.
As I mentioned to you last week, extremist Republicans proceeded with yet another vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over the Biden administration’s handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. Despite the fact that Republicans failed to produce any evidence that Secretary Mayorkas had violated his constitutional duties, the Republicans had enough votes this time around and Secretary Mayorkas was impeached by a vote of 214-213. Every Democrat present and three Republicans voted against the measure.
I had the great pleasure of joining my Democratic colleagues in the House of Representatives at the 2024 Issues Conference in Leesburg, Virginia. This was a time for Democrats to come together to discuss the issues that matter most to Americans. We heard from incredible speakers, including President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. We discussed many issues, including the importance of lowering costs for Americans, protecting workers’ rights and unions, restoring reproductive freedom, and regulating Big Tech.
I had an absolutely fabulous week back home in the 9th Congressional District! I love getting to be out and about in our community, whether I am visiting a school, touring a non-profit organization, or meeting with local elected officials.
