This past week, we held leadership elections for the 118th Congress. I would like to congratulate Minority Leader-designate Hakeem Jeffries, Whip-designate Katherine Clark, and Chairman-designate Pete Aguilar. I have the utmost confidence in our new leaders, who truly epitomize the great diversity of our nation.
As the holiday shopping season begins, we must ensure that toys bring joy, not injury. For 37 years, Illinois PIRG Education Fund has released the Trouble in Toyland report, which has helped shape toy safety regulations since the 1980s. Last week, I attended a press conference at Lurie Children’s Hospital to discuss the findings of the report.

On Thursday, my treasured friend, Nancy Pelosi, announced that she will be leaving House leadership, but will remain in Congress representing her beloved city of San Francisco. This week marks 16 years since I was able to second her nomination as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
As we head towards the end of the year, and the end of the 117th Congress, there are still many things left to accomplish. I am looking forward to closing out the year strong as we continue to deliver results for the American people.

As you may have heard, Kroger, which owns Mariano's, announced plans to purchase Albertsons, which owns Jewel. This could have major implications for grocery prices in our community. Kroger posted record earnings during the pandemic, including $132 billion in 2020. At the same time, Kroger decreased worker pay by 8.1%.
On Friday, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis issued an order that halts the Biden administration from disbursing any student loan relief funds until the court rules on an emergency request by six Republican-led states to block the policy.
This week, I proudly witnessed 65 immigrants from 25 different countries become American citizens. As a first generation American myself, I know just how special this day is. We are a nation of immigrants. Welcome home!
Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, starting in January 2023, insulin will be capped at $35 per month for Medicare beneficiaries. If the Inflation Reduction Act's $35 insulin cap was in effect in 2020, a Medicare beneficiary in Illinois' 9th Congressional District enrolled in a Medicare plan could have saved $1,433 per year. This is a matter of life and death.
